So I’ve been meaning to share this recipe for ages. This Chocolate Fudge Cake was (and still is!) the absolute favorite in our home, and no other cake even comes close. It’s the one my mom made often when we were growing up, and it quickly became legendary among family and friends. Every single time she baked it, people would rave about how rich, moist, and indulgent it was! So much so that I can’t think of a gathering where this cake didn’t steal the spotlight. I’m pretty sure my school and college friends are drooling just looking at this post right now (😜 Don’t worry, guys, we’ll make it again the next time we hang out!).
This recipe is incredibly simple, but the results are truly irresistible. It’s that perfect balance of soft, moist crumb and deep chocolatey flavor that keeps you coming back for “just one more” slice, until suddenly, it’s all gone. Even today, when I make it at home, it rarely lasts more than two days. My kids adore it just as much as I did back then, and I’ve never had to tweak a single thing — it’s perfect exactly the way Mom made it.

Directions
Ready to bring this beloved chocolate fudge cake to life? Don’t worry, it’s much easier than it looks. With a few basic steps and a little bit of stirring magic, you’ll be layering rich cake with a gooey sauce and silky fudge topping in no time. Let’s get baking!
Beat the eggs: In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with the vanilla essence until light and fluffy.
Cream the butter and sugar: In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together. Sift the sugar first to ensure there are no lumps.
Combine eggs and butter mixture: Add the butter-sugar mixture to the beaten eggs and beat until well combined.
Sift and fold in dry ingredients: Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until fully incorporated. Do not over-mix.
Bake the cake: Pour the batter into a pre-greased 8-inch baking pan. Bake at 360°F (or gas mark 4) for 35-45 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool the cake: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Allow the cake to cool completely before the next step.
Slice the cake: Once fully cooled, slice the cake horizontally across the middle. Lay both halves cut-side up on a tray.
Make the fudge sauce: In a non-stick pan over low heat, combine the milk, sugar, butter, and sifted cocoa powder. Stir continuously with a wooden ladle to prevent burning. Once the mixture starts to boil and everything is well combined, you should have a runny, chocolatey sauce. If it's too thick, add a splash of milk. (Ideally, both the fudge sauce and final fudge layer should be made using the double-boiler method to avoid burning. However, I usually opt for the non-stick pan method over low heat, just be sure to stir constantly and keep a close eye to prevent scorching.)
Soak the cake layers: Use a fork or tooth pick to poke holes all over both cake surfaces. Spoon the fudge sauce generously over each half, coating them evenly.
Assemble the cake: Carefully place the top layer over the bottom layer. Spoon a little more fudge sauce over the top.
Prepare the fudge: In a clean non-stick pan over low heat, combine the butter, condensed milk, and sifted cocoa powder. Stir continuously until the mixture begins to boil and thicken into a glossy fudge.
Glaze the cake with fudge: Place the cake on a wire rack with a tray underneath. Pour the hot fudge over the cake, quickly spreading it to cover the entire surface before it begins to set. Work fast to ensure a smooth, even finish.
Let it set: Allow the fudge to settle and stop dripping down the sides. Once the glaze has set, carefully transfer the cake to a serving plate.
Decorate: Decorate as desired. For this version, I’ve kept it simple with a sprinkling of hundreds and thousands.
Slice, serve and enjoy: Once the fudge has fully set, slice the cake, serve, and enjoy every rich, gooey bite!
Conclusion
And that's it! What you get is a rich, chocolatey cake soaked in sauce and coated with glossy fudge — simple enough to make without fancy equipment, but special enough for birthdays or celebrations. Serve it up, and watch it disappear slice by slice!
